President's Message

Terri Oskin , MD, President
The Testy Climate in Neurology and Radiology (Feb, 2012)
Wow, can you believe it’s already February? I hope 2012 is getting off to a smooth start for everyone.
This year will continue to bring many challenges to the medical community regarding reimbursement and restrictions to our autonomy to practice medicine. In this month’s The Message, we are focusing on the technical, clinical and payment issues facing Radiology and Neurology where: 1) significant reductions in payment are expected for many procedures, 2) State and other payers are expected to refuse to approve or pay for new, experimental or emerging techniques in treatment of our patients and 3) Medicaid and others indicate they will rely on evidence-based, outcome-oriented and expert opinion tools before approving new technology use.

About SCMS
The Spokane County Medical Society (SCMS) is a professional membership organization comprised of physicians and physician assistants. The SCMS is devoted to promoting the health and well-being of all the citizens of Spokane County and supporting the educational and professional needs of its membership.
2012 Priorities
“STRIVE to keep the PATIENT first as we pursue the 2012 Priorities to promote the health of populations and engage individual patients in a shared decision-making care model.”
Your 2012 Priorities provide SCMS Leadership and staff the guidance they need to pursue issues that are important to the membership throughout the year. The process of developing the Priorities begins with a survey of the membership in April. A number of topic areas are listed with a ranking from very important to least important. There is also an opportunity to add topic areas which may have not been listed. The 2011 responses (114) were collated and prioritized. The SCMS Executive Committee (EC) reviews the responses and then develops a draft document using the outcomes of the survey. Staff suggest goals based on current and future projections for resources to accomplish the Priorities and taking into account the EC discussion. The Priorities are reviewed, discussed and approved at the December Board of Trustees meeting for implementation in the following year. Please click here to view the 2012 Priorities. The Leadership and staff are always interested in your comments so please call: Keith Baldwin, CEO, at 509 325-5010 or keith@spcms.org .
